Omni Barcode Scanners

Unlike hand-held bar-code scanners, omni-directional barcode scanners provide a faster, more accurate, and more advanced way to send customers through the checkout line. There are three main types of Omnidirectional barcode scanners, including the standard Omni-directional Barcode Scanners, In-Counter Barcode Scanners & Scanner/Scales, and Barcode 2D Imagers. Each presenting slightly different characteristics to accommodate different retail applications.

Omni-Directional Barcode Scanners:

Omnidirectional bar code scanners generally feature advanced laser scan engines for faster scanning capabilities. Many are presentation style scanners that can be quick with smaller items. Others have the mobility to scan larger items, allowing for use with a wider variety of merchandise. Often the standard omnidirectionals will be able to switch from single line laser mode to a rasterizing laser mode at the push of a button. Disadvantages include an overall lack of mobility compared to hand-held scanner and they tend not to work very well outdoors. The  Metrologic Fusion combines hands free scanning with a comfortable grip for more mobile hand held use, with single line and omnidirectional modes available. The Symbol LS 9208 is another good choice as it comes with a 100-line rasterizing omni-directional scan pattern, single line scan mode, built-in shock absorption, and adjustable stand.

In-Counter Barcode Scanner & Scanner/Scales:

The greatest advantage of these types of scanner is first pass scanning for speedy checkout which explains why there is such high demand in supermarket applications. Built-in scanner/scales promote accuracy of inventory and prevent shrinkage. Disadvantages include loss of mobility, which means that a smaller hand-held may be necessary for larger items, and sometimes difficulties with troubleshooting or repairs. These scanners are slightly more costly, but are worth it for extremely high volume retail environments. The Metrologic Statos provides high speed, first pass reliability with the convenience of fast and easy repairs. The Datalogic Magellan 8500 aggressively scans all 6 sides of an item and incorporates advanced decoding software.

Barcode 2D Imagers:

Combining 2D imagers with presentation style, omnidirectional scanning produces a great addition to any point-of-sale system, making 2D scanning even faster. Similar to the standard Omni-Directional Barcode Scanner, the 2D barcode imager may be limited in mobility and can run a little on the high side of standard omni directional prices. However, these scanners provide excellent performance as seen with the Metrologic Genesis. With a sleek, more sophisticated omnidirectional style, the Genesis looks impressive while assuring swift readings of dirty or damaged 1D and 2D barcodes.
